Southern Kneeboard Association

The Southern Kneeboard Association (SKA) was formed by a group of South Australian Kneeboarders in 2001.  Phil Arthur (aka Pinebox or PB) was one of the driving forces behind the formation of this Association and was its original President. (see Club History).  In 2012 Pinebox has again taken over the reigns of Club President.

The original 8 members have now grown to over 20 members including one from Ceduna and one from Robe.

The group originally had close ties with Kneeboard Surfing Australia (KSA) with Phil Arthur being South Australia's representative/ spokesperson on the KSA committee.  In 2010 SKA became affiliated with Surfing SA.  Now members of SKA are also members of Surfing SA and can take advantage of Surfing SA's insurance benefits as well as being able to compete in State Titles and kneeboard surfing Pro-Am events that are run by the various state clubs and KSA.

In 2009 a group of members, backed by SKA and headed by Phil Arthur started the first ever SA Kneeboard Surfing Pro-Am, namely the Encounter Coast Kneeboard Classic (ECKC).  This event became part of the Australian Professional kneeboarding circuit.  Fittingly Phil Arthur was the winner of the inaugural ECKC, but it has since been won by interstate competitors with the 2010 champion becoming the Australian Kneeboard Surfing Champion in that year, thanks to his win in the ECKC.  This event received great support from sponsors who are listed on the page dedicated to that event (link).  Unfortunately 2011 saw the final of this event as costs could not be supported by the small number of entries.

SKA is still committed to the original reason behind its formation in that its main emphasis is on promoting social activities for its members.  To achieve this the club meets each month, usually the first Sunday of the month (Calendar), to enjoy a surf together, some coffee or feast together at a local bakery to share bragging rights on who had the best wave.  Twice a year, more if there is interest, the club organises a trip away, with a weekend trip to Kangaroo Island being the most popular.  Trips to Yorke Peninsula and Victoria have also been organised in the past.  In future trips to the South East and West Coasts of South Australia are being considered to meet with the members in those areas and share some local waves with them and hopefully surf some new spots.  Emphasis will be on fun and enjoying the company.

Apart from the AGM, SKA has two semi-formal events, namely the mid-year dinner and the Christmas Dinner.  These events provide the opportunity for members to bring their wives, partner or friend to a club event and enjoy a meal together.  At the Christmas Dinner the club awards are presented and occasionally some goodies are given to the members.

From its humble beginnings the club SKA has now grown to be an active group supporting and promoting kneeboard surfing in SA, with it main emphasis on the social aspect of the sport.
