February Monthly Meet (5 February 2012)
Well the first official club meet has been run and won by "Beck's Bake House". Yes folks the surf and weather didn't turn up to play!! Onshores, rain and no surf, gotta love summer weather in South Oz. Cade, Craig, Mark, Paul, Patrick, Scott, Sandy and myself optimistically braved the elements and got out-smarted by Mother Nature.
So after fogging up the inside of the Ford Courier, we made the call for coffee and cakes at Beck's Bake House at Port Noarlunda.
| "The coffee was hot, the cakes a treat, it was good in the end, to our first meet!! |
A few ideas have been born:
- We need a theme song, but club members wearing a cape to the surf is optional!!
- Phil needs to put on a seminar to explain how no surf ever gets any bigger than 3ft.
- Mark didn't eat a massive Custard Berliner your Honour!!!!! It was all vicious rumours!!
I promise to dial in the proper number for good surf at the next club meet!!
Cheers, Pinebox.
November Monthly Meet (6 November 2011)
An excellent turnout for the Club's November Monthly Meet. Eleven members, joined by a number of friends were not deterred by the poor conditions forecast and headed south in search of a wave. Meeting at Waitpinga Point where a small, acceptable wave was running off a few of the banks near the point, it looked almost tempting. A call had to be made. The decision was made easier as a swarm of grommets started filling the car park, with their mums and dads, and it looked like they will be all over those small breaks. As Pinebox said "Like flies over sh#@!" Suddenly the waves (the term is used loosely) on the more wind exposed side at Parsons Point, looked the better option.
It didn't take long to suit up, scale the cliff and walk out back to stand in the line-up, waiting (hoping) for a wave. The exceptional low tide and the on-shore wind made an occasional wave break, offering a short ride. I made the tough decision to man the camera and not hit the surf. This did give me the opportunity to watch and learn. Quite clearly the standout surfer was Pinebox pulling off some hard turns in waves that had no power. Craig, Mark and Simon caught some of the 'bigger' waves and pulled off a few good turns, showing patience and experience. But the surprise for me was the three juniors, Pat, Scott and Ben. Their surfing skills are improving and I would suggest that some of us more senior kneelos, better watch out. Paul Francis receives the drop-in award, dropping in on Pinebox who came screaming down the line on a one foot ripper. They kissed and made up (not literally). Both Sandy and Dave managed some smaller lefts getting in a few turns and I am sure having fun.
Given the surf conditions, this Club Meet was another huge success. It shows that you don't always need good surf to have fun (but it helps). A good fun day with good company.

July Monthly Meet (3 July 2011)
Another good turnout for our club meet this month. Eleven members and friends made their way to Waitpinga Point for a surf at a few of the sandbars just up from the point. Everybody hit the water at the same time and spread themselves over three breaks. It was good to see eleven kneelos in the water sharing waves.
I use the term sharing waves loosely as Simon (Scooter) nearly earned a new nickname, "Mr Greedy" as he seemed to be inside me on every wave I paddled for. Craig, Sandy, and the potential new members, Pat, Scott and Ben took over the right hander that closed occasionally on the bigger waves, but they scored plenty of rides to make it a fun day.
Paul (Mr. Smooth) and Pinebox, paddled further east to take on a consistent left hander and shared that with a few stand ups. Mark, Stylemaster, Scooter and myself took on a left hander nearer the point, which improved as the tide came in and gave us some fast, hollow but short rides. It wasn't long before Mrs. Smooth paddled over to join us leaving Pinebox paddle from one end of Waitpinga Beach to the other. He claims he was looking for better waves, as long as he wasn't looking for better company.
I only saw a few rides, but the most memorable was Mark taking off deep on a left hander that covered him completely. He didn't make the wave, but gracefully went over the falls scoring a perfect 10 double twist summersault. Onya Mark.
The weather was great, surf was small with an off-shore wind, company was excellent. What a great day!

June Monthly Meet (5 June 2011)
A big turnout for this month's surf with 10 members and 3 possible new recruits heading for the South Coast. . Welcome to Patrick, Scott and Joe, all young Juniors who were not put off by the age, grey hair or poor jokes of the older members.
The call was made to surf Middleton, which was big and quite clean at first. Gunther and Simon thought Shark Alley was a better option so headed off for the long spooky paddle and have not been seen since.
Cade waited a while in his car, tells us he got suited up, then saw the surf getting bad, so got dressed again!! Likely story!
As for the rest of us, it was a mixed bag of a day. It was one of those tempting yet oh so frustrating days that only Middleton can dish up in winter. Huge paddle out the back, big feathering waves that never break and lots of missed opportunities when they roll beneath you as you paddle like crazy.
Some good waves were had, but they were few and far between and the bumpy faces as the morning progressed were very challenging.
Freddie enjoyed his walk back from Goolwa, or somewhere nearby after the cross shore wind and a drift took him eastwards.
As always, we finished with a bakery stop and some good company. Not an epic day, but a good day out nonetheless.
See you at the next SKA surf in July, Craig

March Monthly Meet (6 March 2011)
El Presidente Craig gave the call early and everybody met at Parsons Beach. The southerly swell was a little inconsistent, however Parsons had some clean lines and lots of guys out. A quick check on the other side at Waits Point revealed a little more swell and the call was made to hit the water.
Clean 2-3ft swell was a welcome sight, but the shifting peaks and the strong easterly current made it difficult to sit in the right spot. Paul Francis, Stylemaster and Pinebox picked up the most waves and ripped them to shreds. Craig was practising his wipe-outs and after his first wave already holds the wipe-out of the year. David and Cade unfortunately caught a few to many close-outs and found the conditions difficult. Mark got a few clean rights. Freddie started on the small rights alongside the rip but later paddled out back and got a few clean rides. Maxi picked up a couple of long rights and made the most of them. Simon who rolled up late also took off late and got caught behind on gnarly lefts.
All in all a good day. Warm weather, good company and some nice waves.
